It all started with Blueberries…… Now so much more!

Myron Metzger, of Berry Hill Farms, has an easy-going, laid-back tone and jokingly exclaimed, “You caught me,” when I finally got him on the phone. What began as a family friendly activity in 2003 blossomed into their family-run farm, tucked behind the house on their property. Berry Hill Farm joined the Ft. Wayne Farmers Market nearly eight years ago. Initially, they offered just blueberries, then expanded to a few other selections, such as produce, maple syrup or seasonal offerings. “Occasionally I’ll bring a batch of flowers from our garden. It wouldn’t be much,” Myron tells me, with a deep sigh. 

His soft, careful cadence as we speak on the phone is reminiscent of their farm; evocative of imagery from Anne of Green Gables or a lazy afternoon napping in the sun, unbothered about anything beyond the treeline. It’s nearly as refreshing as their frozen blueberries.

As the season turns colder, there isn’t a worry about the produce they offer customers at the market. With the use of greenhouses, Berry Hill Farm offers year round produce options to the market patrons. “When it gets cool here pretty soon, we’ll get started with frozen blueberries. . . It makes a pretty good addition to the winter line up.” Myron and his family also work to plant a variety of new things and test out what the market might like. A light change to his tone, and it’s clear that Myron enjoys experimenting with their line-up and offerings for the market. One of the things that patrons like most during the winter months is ginger root and, their crowd favorite, frozen blueberries.
