Young’s Greenhouse
Blake Young, co-owner of Young’s Greenhouse and Florist, has an easy, conversational tone—and a light rainstorm as the ambient background—it was like talking to a favorite teacher about plants over a cup of tea.
As the oldest greenhouse, full-service florist, and garden shop in Fort Wayne, brothers—Blake and Brian Young—offer nearly any service or product around gardening and plants that you could imagine. The operation has spanned five generations, and for the past eight years they’ve provided the Fort Wayne Marketplace with their selections, and the community with the professional planter’s podcast, It Ain’t Dirt, It’s Soil!
As mentioned in a podcast episode, the FWFM is their favorite market. While talking with him, Blake explained, “we liked the idea of being downtown and a year-long market and [the FWFM] was the only option.” He, then, facetiously said, “Also, I needed something else to do during the winter.”
As a greenhouse and full florist and garden shop, Young’s offers variety and selection that other florists might not be able to. “We can offer more seasonal decor options. . . we do flowers all winter long and have fresh floral options,” Blake said about their winter month selections, which include Christmas cactus, primrose, pansies, and the much favored cacti and succulent varieties. This means Young’s can also offer microgreen vegetables, floral arrangements, as well as houseplants. “People out there don’t know that we’re florists. . . [we offer] lots of houseplants, fresh flowers, seasonal blooming [options].”
Closer to spring, once the transplants in their greenhouse begin blooming, more vegetable varieties will be available. “If the season is going well, I’ll also start bringing more bedding plants, such as marigolds, petunias, and hanging baskets.”
